The Epson 9800 is a very proficient printer, capable of high output speeds and dazzling image reproduction, but in order to get the most out of your printer, you’ll need to educate yourself regarding paper selection. It’s not enough to simply walk into the store and purchase a photo paper, you’ll have to make sure that what you’re getting is compatible with your software and driver setup.
Many people make the mistake of using a generic paper setting on their printer. While this might not seem like a significant problem to the casual user, it is important to understand that there are many reasons why these paper settings exist. When drivers for a the Epson 9800 were developed, certain paper types were included under the “Paper selection” options. These are, in effect, “profiles” for how much ink the printer should use, and where. This varies from paper to paper. Why? All it takes is a simple glance to see that the base color tone of each type of paper is slightly different. Some papers have a warmer amber hue to them, while others are a very bright white. Other papers still have a much cooler, almost blue tone. Now look closely at the paper. Some types of paper are extremely smooth, while others are much more porous. These factors alone mean that the same image will come out completely different simply by switching the paper. Inevitably, one image will be either soaked with too much ink, or not enough ink, and one image will be shifted in its color temp. To avoid this, take a look at your Epson 9800 printer’s properties tab and see what types of paper are supported with your current drivers. Make note of these before going to store, so that you can be certain the paper you choose is supported for your printer.
